I drive to squeeze as many mpg as I can out of my '95 Camry: I accellerate gradually, I coast down hills, if I see a red light ahead, I coast up to it. By doing this I average around 35 mpg (not exceptional, but good). However, I seem to invoke road rage in a lot of people who are in a hurry - has anyone else experienced this - how do we diffuse this aggression?
It was almost 25 years ago when I lived there (pre-big dig), I used to take the train to north station and walk across town (in good weather); otherwise I had to transfer to the T, which was no fun either.
Prior to the big dig I REFUSED to work in Boston. Just too much of a pain. It's a lot better now. Traffic use to get backed up from Boston to 495 (about 20 miles) every day. Now there are pockets, but nothing to what it was. The commute home on Fridays is tough, or when there's an accident or IDIOTS like this morning.
I-95 is no different. Although there is less total volume lately, the backups are still occuring. When you get to the front of one of them, invariably, there is some moron doing <65 in the PASSING lane. There are 4 lanes, why do they insist on traveling in the passing lane? These are the same people who merge onto the expressway and cross 3 lanes to park in the passing lane for their entire ride...
I think i-95/128 is FAR WORSE. I HATE traveling that road. I can get to Downtown Boston from the intersection of 93 and 128 then I can get to Burlington from the same spot...and Burlington is closer.

Seems to be a New England tradition.

Yup...and about 200' before their exit they then get over to the right lane and exit...What inconsiderate little dweebs.
I try and drive my antique cars from time to time when the weather is good for my own enjoyment. Many times people with restored older cars do drive easy and slower than traffic flow staying in the right lane. Rarely do we drive in rush hour traffic with our prized cars.
That being said, I've noticed people can be bullies in traffic especially if they are in a bad mood in a hurry. I have a 67 VW Beetle recently restored. It is factory stock except for electronic ignition module in the distributor and synthetic lubricants in the engine and drivetrain. I get a peak mileage of 42 MPG regularly on the highway at a speed of 60 MPH average. While this is the speed I would choose to drive the car, once I get to a larger city in it I notice people ducking in front of me changing lanes as if to attempt to clip my front end on freeways. Mind you, my 60 MPH is now THE MAXIMUM LEGAL SPEED LIMIT once arriving in the metropolitan area. Another detail I need to mention is this activity is much worse when I'm in the Beetle than in a different larger car at the same speed in the same locations. Perhaps a small car tends to be whimpy in the eyes of some drivers especially if in a bad mood and in a hurry while having a really bad day. Sometimes there are no solutions for these problems except to drive safe and be on your toes.
Mind you, I stay to the right lane on the highway and drive above the minimum speed. At 60 MPH average you do overtake other cars going slower from time to time. If a driver is in a hurry, especially if driving above the legal speed limit, then it is their responsibility to drive in a manner that is safe. Problem is many are not smart enough to realize the potential for disaster. As a person who has driven very fast in a hurry many times I can tell you it is better to arrive in one piece than to never arrive. As far as I'm concerned with gas prices as high as they are I will continue to drive reasonably in my Beetle and hope the rest of the world respects my space as long as I leave them an open lane. Let's be reasonable people.
