SUV GLUT

Why would someone be interested in buying a rapidly depreciating asset like a used gas guzzling SUV? Even if you pay low book value for the vehicle, the rapid depreciation is no bargain. If the book value let's say is $30,000, I would pay no more than $15,000 for the SUV because I know it will continue to depreciate so fast. Does this make sense to you?

What's the advantage of buying an SUV at a "bargain" vs paying a premium for a car that will have excellent resale value later on?

I don't drive much either and the driving I do is in town driving, where I only get about 20mpg in the summer. It's getting to the point of where it costs more in gas than it does to aquire goods at the store. I'm thinking about buying a small used compact car because it won't depreciate as fast in resale value as a large sedan or SUV. I don't understand the argument people make that you have to drive so many miles a year to break even in the savings for a compact car. If I have $20,000 to spend for a used car, why should I buy a large sedan over a small compact car? Also, why should I pay low book value for a gas guzzling SUV? If the book value is $35,000, the most I would pay is $20,000 because I know the vehicle will depreciate rapidly and so I need a "hedge" against future depreciation

Re: SUV GLUT
So, what is your point? As long as you have liberal politicians influenced by glassey-eyed, paranoid '60's era hippies it won't matter what you use for transportation because all forms of transportation won't be groovey to the environment and will be heavily taxed to make you feel guilty for useing God-given environmental assets. Hell, we'd be taxed for horse terd if we should go back to horse&buggy transportation. The answer is to repeal all of those Clinton, self-defeating environmental laws that won't allow us to drill for oil even with low impact on the environment. We currently have foreign nations drilling just off of our coastlines and then reselling the oil to us - when it came from within our own boundries. Its time to become wiser not panicey. Panicey is exactly what socialist, '60's hippies want. The real inconvenient truth is that the rest of the world doesn't understand "Groovey."

Re: SUV GLUT
I am amazed and amuzed by the disdain some have for SUVs. Although I too feel that a great many are bought for the image, so what? The price of fuel is continually pushing the unneeded gas hogs into the garage for long rests. But several SUVs get acceptable mileage (20+ mpg), often better than mini-vans and certainly station wagonos. The image of a snobbish, arrogant woman with a cell phone at her ear, driving an
Escalade with little concern for other traffic is a commical picture, but how often is that the case?

Re: Re: SUV GLUT
Not as common as it is with the other types of SUVs. I can't think of any self respecting person that isn't in the entertainment industry(or distributer of illegal goods and services) that owns an Escalade.

Re: SUV GLUT
If you believe there is a commodity bubble, now is the time to find a nice SUV extra cheap. I just bought a Suburban for towing, very low mileage, for $3000.

Re: SUV GLUT
Hey guys the price of gasoline may rapidly reduce the ownership of pleasure boats and hence you may no longer need your SUV.
