Read the whole story What do you think of Sinkin' Soon by Norah Jones? Norah's latest disc moves her closer into the category of "singer/songwriter" and further away from any connection to being a "jazz singer". (Every song on the disc was written or co-written by Norah. )
However, there's one tune that has a definite root in the jazz tradition, a very old root. What do you think of Sinkin' Soon? Would you like to hear it on KPLU? Do you think it fits the sound of KPLU?

Yes. I think it fits into KPLU's jazz genre. It's kind of got this old-time feel to it with the more modern voice and style of Norah. I can picture one of the old Southern black singers singing it in an old shack during the depression. Or something like that!
Keep up the great work at KPLU. I love ya (especially the great BLUES you play on the weekend nights. In fact, I just purchased 2 Ronnie Earl CDs because of the song DROWN IN MY OWN TEARS (with David Fathead Newman) you played on your station one night). Jo Schumacher Kent, WA
Sinkin' soon is great fun. I haven't heard rest of the new album. I like this song. I think it fits just fine on KPLU. There are many other times you have played similar genre, although all of them are really great but different (Maria Muldaur, Pink Martini, Ibrahim Ferrer, all sorts of different vocal sounds that are creative and although not pure jazz very much connected to its roots.)
Great sound! Keep up the good work KPLU. there is no greater station. We are so lucky to have you here in the Pacific Northwest. Cherie in Seattle
Nope, it just doesn't float my boat. It is NOT JAZZ. I would NOT like to hear it on your station. Norah belongs on soft rock stations or country stations.
Instead, may I request you play KURT ELLING's "Resolution", "Winelight", "Time to Say GOodbye" and "Minauno", "Gingerbread Boy" and "Going to Chicago" with Jon Hendricks.
Sinkin' Soon belongs on KPLU (my favorite station of all time!), given the breadth of jazz and blues played on the station. I've always appreciated Abe Beeson's inclusion of Norah songs on his show, even though I have her other disks and played them to death. Norah is not an easy listening vocalist. Somehow she adds something special even to such jazz stalwarts as the "Nearness of You."

I just wanted to comment about this whole "should we or shouldn't we" thing. It seems to me like a fairly typical Seattle-area process where the people we voted on/hired/pledged our money to, to make decisions, don't take responsibility, and instead throw it back on the public. It's a wonder that anything ever gets done (or if it gets done, it gets done badly or half-assed). Let's not have this "process" seep into public radio!
There are tons of things I can do to make my own music decisions, like making playlists in iTunes for an iPod, creating CD compilation, etc., but I listen to KPLU because I like the decisions that the music director and DJs make. I don't have to do anything but listen and pledge (and turn other people on to it). I find this trend of asking people what they want sort of disturbing. Please continue making the excellent decisions you have been making over the years. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but that's creativity and to be creative you have to take responsibility. I completely agree with the previous post-er (about professionals passing parts of their jobs back to us). Just get on with it!
As the "professional" who helps make the music decisions here, this is not a gimmick, nor an abdication of responsibility for making airplay choices. I am genuinely curious about what listeners think about this track, for many of the reasons stated by the comments thus far. Don't look into it for more than what it is. And thanks for chiming in.
Nick Francis - KPLU Music Director
The problem with asking for public input about music, or pretty much any other topic for that matter, is that if you listen, you'll end up with the lowest common denominator. Over the laast few years, KPLU has been drifting more and more away from Jazz, and more into Easy Listening/Smooth Jazz. I wonder how much of this is due to focus groups and other public input. I'd LOVE to hear some programming by someone who is passionate about Jazz, rather than having the public vote on which pop songs they like. As it is, I time-shift Jazz After Hours and listen to it during the week. I just hope that Jim Wilke keeps going for a few more years while I'm building a tape library!
For the song at hand, it's pleasant enough Tin Pan Alley type of tune, but pretty deflavorized. Norah Jones' voice reminds me a little of Billie Holiday, but the thing is, Billie Holiday delivers more passion and soul in a few notes than Norah Jones can produce in her entire recorded output. I know I've heard Billie Holiday on KPLU, but not for a long, long time. Please remedy that! Dave, Seattle RSS |
