As much as I appreciate the talent of Norah Jones as an outstanding singer and songwriter, I do not believe this particular track is appropriate. However, with the jazzy and blues vibe, I am sure that many would argue for this track to be included. My vote still stands as a strong "No."

Re: Sinkin' Soon by Norah Jones

The problem with asking for public input about music, or pretty much any other topic for that matter, is that if you listen, you'll end up with the lowest common denominator. Over the laast few years, KPLU has been drifting more and more away from Jazz, and more into Easy Listening/Smooth Jazz. I wonder how much of this is due to focus groups and other public input. I'd LOVE to hear some programming by someone who is passionate about Jazz, rather than having the public vote on which pop songs they like. As it is, I time-shift Jazz After Hours and listen to it during the week. I just hope that Jim Wilke keeps going for a few more years while I'm building a tape library!

For the song at hand, it's pleasant enough Tin Pan Alley type of tune, but pretty deflavorized. Norah Jones' voice reminds me a little of Billie Holiday, but the thing is, Billie Holiday delivers more passion and soul in a few notes than Norah Jones can produce in her entire recorded output. I know I've heard Billie Holiday on KPLU, but not for a long, long time. Please remedy that!

Dave, Seattle

As the "professional" who helps make the music decisions here, this is not a gimmick, nor an abdication of responsibility for making airplay choices.
Re:Sinkin' Soon by Norah Jones

I just wanted to comment about this whole "should we or shouldn't we" thing. It seems to me like a fairly typical Seattle-area process where the people we voted on/hired/pledged our money to, to make decisions, don't take responsibility, and instead throw it back on the public. It's a wonder that anything ever gets done (or if it gets done, it gets done badly or half-assed). Let's not have this "process" seep into public radio!

There are tons of things I can do to make my own music decisions, like making playlists in iTunes for an iPod, creating CD compilation, etc., but I listen to KPLU because I like the decisions that the music director and DJs make. I don't have to do anything but listen and pledge (and turn other people on to it). I find this trend of asking people what they want sort of disturbing.

Please continue making the excellent decisions you have been making over the years. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but that's creativity and to be creative you have to take responsibility.

Re:Sinkin' Soon by Norah Jones

Sinkin' Soon belongs on KPLU (my favorite station of all time!), given the breadth of jazz and blues played on the station. I've always appreciated Abe Beeson's inclusion of Norah songs on his show, even though I have her other disks and played them to death. Norah is not an easy listening vocalist. Somehow she adds something special even to such jazz stalwarts as the "Nearness of You."

-- Dave in Woodinville
