What do you think is the most important way to give kids a head start on a healthy life? If you are a parent, what was most important to you when your child was young?
Making sure he ate right? Reading to her every night before bed? Getting accepted into pre-school?
And, as a parent, what did/do you struggle with, in terms of giving your child the head start you want for him/her?
Is it too hard to get her into pre-school? Is feeding him the healthiest food too expensive? Are good doctors few and far between? Is it hard to find the time to spend one-on-one with your child?
Share your thoughts below!

Regulating Chemicals in Consumer Products

There is a significant difference between the way the United States and the European Union regulate the use of chemicals in consumer products.
In the European Union, many chemicals that are merely suspected by scientists to be dangerous have been banned from consumer products as diverse as electronics, children's toys and cosmetics. Legislation called REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) recently went into effect in the EU that will require chemical companies to provide data on how their chemicals affect human health and the environment.
The United States, on the other hand, takes a very different approach to chemical regulation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will only ban a chemical after governmental testing has exhaustively proven that chemical to be harmful.
Defenders of the EU's approach to preventative regulation say that it properly puts the burden on chemical producers to ensure the safety of their products that we use every day. Rigorous studies are required before new substances are released into the marketplace.
Opponents, however, argue that providing conclusive scientific research on every chemical is not feasible. With tens of thousands of chemicals in commercial use today, the sheer volume would grind the entire process to a halt. Also, with many chemicals, it is uncertain how many of the health effects seen in animal testing will actually occur in humans.
What do you think? Should the U.S. ban chemicals that are only suspected to be unsafe? Should testing be required for every chemical used in consumer products? Whose responsibility should it be to test those chemicals?

BackTalk w/ Becca: What if YOU ran the station?

What if you ran KTEH? Would you change the programming? What shows would you add? What local programs would you make?

As the new Executive Director, I'm thrilled to be leading the station into the future. I have big plans for KTEH.

I see it as a hub for community interaction. An electronic campfire, if you will, where everyone is invited to share their story. It should also be a resource for entertainment, information and inspiration.

I want to make sure KTEH reflects its community of viewers, their issues and concerns.

And that's where you come in.

What do you think the station should do for the community it serves? How can we best serve you? What kind of local programming would you watch? Is there an issue in you area that the media is not addressing?

Please tell me how you see KTEH and how you'd like to see it in the future. And don't be surprised if I respond right here, because I intend to fully participate in the discussion.

I welcome your feedback, and expect this to be the first of many exciting conversations!

Becca King Reed
Executive Director, KTEH

Climate Change and Your Health

The California Climate Change Center report, "Our Changing Climate: Assessing the Risks to California [pdf]," writes that temperatures in our state are expected to rise between 4.7 to 10.5 degrees by the end of the century. What does this mean for our health? According to the report, these are some major areas of concern:

•	The Sierra snow pack is projected to melt between 70-90%, making our water supply unstable.

•	Higher temperatures mean worse air quality and an increase in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Warmer temperatures also lead to wider areas of vector-borne diseases, like lyme disease, and even the appearance of exotics like malaria and dengue fever. And with hotter temperatures, we’re likely to experience longer and more intense heat waves, making summers even more difficult for the elderly, poor and those who work outside.

•	Rising sea levels would taint the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta with salt water, affecting almost two-thirds of the state's drinking water.

We are no longer talking about something that will affect our grandchildren. Climate change in California will affect us and our children.

So, we want to hear from you…

What can you do to help offset the affects of climate change and protect your health? What changes can you make in your everyday life? And what changes in public policy or new regulations could make a difference?

Alternative Birthing

Have you or someone you know had an experience with alternative birthing?

What factors led you away from a conventional-style birth?

What obstacles, if any, did you face?

What about cost factors? Should alternative birthing options be readily accessible to everyone? If so, who pays?

And finally, if you are a midwife, doula or a traditional medical practitioner, what have your experiences been in the field? What can be done to make your role easier?
