Genetics

December 2, 2008

Do you have a question about genetic medicine or genetic counseling? Ask the experts you heard today on KUAR's program Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

Drs. Kent McKelvey and G. Bradley Schaefer of the Division of Genetics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) are available to answer your questions and read your comments right here on the discussion board. This is not a live chat, so you will likely not receive an immediate response, but the doctors will be monitoring the discussion for the next few days and posting responses every day.

About the Discussion Hosts:

G. Bradley Schaefer, M.D., is a nationally known, board-certified genetics expert who was appointed the inaugural director of the Division of Genetics in the College of Medicine at UAMS in August 2008. Schaefer's research focuses on human clinical genetics with emphasis in neurogenetics and neurodevelopmental disabilities.

His research utilizes computerized image analysis to quantify developmental changes in the brain, face and inner ear. He has authored over 200 scientific articles, book chapters and invited reviews. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Child Neurology, and sits on the National Advisory Board for the Sotos Syndrome Support Association.

Kent D. McKelvey, M.D., is an assistant professor in the College of Medicine at UAMS who has served as director of cancer genetics in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. He is an authority on rural medicine and medical genetics.

His clinical interests include cancer genetics and genetic testing. McKelvey's own research has focused on a way to computerize family history to screen for inheritable disease. Until it is possible to obtain a blood sample to evaluate polymorphisms and predict disease, family history often provides the best relative risk estimate.

What does Thanksgiving mean to you?

This week, KUAR's show Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (click here to listen) asked guests from different generations what Thanksgiving meant to them. Guests included Jennifer Pyron, Associate Publisher and Editor of Little Rock Family magazine, and Thomas Starnes, a Senior at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs. This discussion board is your chance to connect with them and leave your comments or questions. They'll be reading the posts daily and be ready to respond. Or, feel free to just post your general thoughts on the Thanksgiving holiday.
Pyron, who has two children and was speaking for the middle generation, noted during YTT that in her family Thanksgiving is mostly about food and spending time with the family, rather than exploring and recognizing the history of the holiday. She says she is often so focused on cooking that perfect Thanksgiving meal (and then eating it) that it's hard for her to truly stop and give thanks on this day.
Pyron says that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which traditionally is seen as a significant television event that kicks off the holiday season, doesn't mean much to her children, who would rather change the TV channel because the floats in the parade just bore them. And, Pyron noted that in hard economic times she wonders whether families will be able to justify spending so much money on just one meal.
Starnes, who was speaking for the younger generation, says he mostly looks forward to Thanksgiving because it indicates that deer hunting season has arrived. He agrees with Pyron that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is not part of the younger generation's Thanksgiving Day experience.
Now it's your turn to share your thoughts on what Thanksgiving Day (and the start of the holiday period) means to you.

What do you think about the West Memphis Three case?

Defense lawyers for the so-called West Memphis Three are seeking to have their murder convictions overturned based on new DNA and forensic evidence.

Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelly and Jason Baldwin were convicted in the slayings of three 8-year old boys in 1993. Their cases have been the subject of two HBO documentaries and a book by reporter Mara Leveritt.

What's your opinion of the West Memphis Three case? Do you believe Echols, Misskelly and Baldwin got fair trials? Do you think they deserve new trials based on new evidence introduced recently?

Do you support the idea of a state lottery to fund education?

Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter is backing a proposal to create a state lottery to fund college scholarships in Arkansas. His proposed constitutional amendment will be on the 2008 general election ballot if it's wording is approved by the Attorney General and backers collect the needed 78,000 petition signatures.

Do you think it's time Arkansas joined the majority of other states that operate a state lottery? Will you vote for the Halter proposal? What sort of lottery games would you like to see: daily contests, scratch-off tickets, huge multi-state Lotto jackpots? If approved, will you take part in the lottery by purchasing tickets on a regular basis?

Does Mike Huckabee have a real chance of becoming president?

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee continues to confound the pundits by attracting support for his Republican presidential campaign without a lot of money. A recent poll showed him running third in Iowa with 12% support, ahead of Rudy Giuliani's 11%.

Do you think Huckabee has a real chance of winning the Republican nomination? If he does, how does he stack up against Hillary Clinton and the other leading Democrats? Is tiny Hope, Arkansas in line to send a second native son to the White House?

Where can you find the best barbecue in Arkansas?

The recent destruction by fire of Lindsey's Barbecue in North Little Rock left the state with one less source for pulled pork, fried pies and iced tea. But there are still plenty of great barbecue joints in Arkansas.

What is your favorite barbecue restaurant in the Natural State? What types of 'cue do they serve? Pork or beef? What about the extras: beans, potato salad, bread?

Share your thoughts by adding a comment below.

Should Arkansas increase the severance tax on natural gas?

Arkansas collects far less severance tax on natural gas than surrounding states, and with the growing Fayetteville Shale gas play in north-central Arkansas there has been talk of increasing the severance tax rate.

State lawmakers appear unwilling to increase the tax, so the issue may be put before voters in next year's general election.
