Johns Hopkins sociologist Andrew Cherlin says there's upheaval in the American family. Compared to other countries - we marry more, divorce more and live with more short-term partners. His new book is a survey of the history and the state of marriage and Cherlin says that our conflicting models of personal freedom and traditional unions lie at the heart of the issue. Monday - he joins guest host Bill Allred to talk about "The Marriage-Go-Round."

I see KUER is pulling out all the stops on gay rights and such. Is there still some pretense of unbiased public-minded journalism there? The real thing would be useful in a place where news sources are divided by political/religious stance, and audiences are too.

Re: How Marriage Has Changed
I believe the program was quite objective. Of course gay marriage is going to be brought up in a conversation about marriage. It is a hot topic these days.
I come from a very religious, Utah home in which my mother married and divorced 5 times (so far). The statistics against me are staggering, enough to frighten my husband, whose parents have been together for over 40 years. I admit my first instinct in the face of confrontation is to run (but I am lucky enough to recognize this as a learned behavior and to deal with it as it comes). Needless to say, I completely agree with Dr. Cherlin when he says that people should take marriage more seriously and consider their children before marching partners in the front door and out the back. It is dysfunctional and selfish on the part of the parent and DEEPLY effects the child's perspective in their own future relationships. Even though I am married and intend on staying that way, my view of marriage in general is quite negative. As terrible as it may sound, I doubt I would have gotten married if it weren't for insurance benefits because I believe that it is possible for two people to commit without a piece of paper from government or church.

Re: Re: How Marriage Has Changed
It's a hot topic on KUER, in particular. A pro-same-sex marriage host interviews a pro-same-sex marriage guest. Sure, that's fair and balanced.

I'm all for same-sex marriage and gay rights, but I'm tired of not being able to hear more than one side of an issue treated fairly.

Re: Re: Re: How Marriage Has Changed
I think its interesting how you pick that particular subject to complain about when it played such a tiny part in this particular piece. I think the conservative view on homosexuality and gay marriage was given a fair voice on the most recent show pertaining to that issue, "Debating the Causes of Homosexuality". Do you disagree?

Gay issues play a small role in a curiously large number of Radio West programs. Did you know that Isaac Newton may possibly maybe could have been gay?

I left comments at the page for the program you refer to explaining why it was anything but fair. It was all too typical of Radio West. Here's the link:
