Re: All PRI shows
How do I comment on Bob Edwards Weekend show?

I wished to start a conversation with Mr. Edwards about the many examples of so-called "silly" spending/earmarks mentioned in responses to the proposed bailout and FY09 Omnibus bills. Many of the examples given pertained to environmental or natural resource issues that are real and important - but easily made to sound silly. Since Mr. Edwards is not as tied to the short-term news cycle as some others; and since Mr. Edwards is a well-educated and informed person who likes to explore lesser-known topics, I thought he might want to work with me and colleagues on exploring why funding for honey bee research, for example, is a wise expenditure of public funds that will benefit all Americans who eat.

Yours,

Faith T. Campbell

Re: All PRI shows
Listen to a NPR show this past Thursday, March 12 at 10:00PM in Philadelphia, concerning a story on rabbit pellets. Is this available in a podcast?

Re: All PRI shows
Can someone tell me the name of the woodwind ensemble that is played between shows -- I don't know whether it's used by PRI or NPR -- their progams are run together in my area. I would like to buy their recordings --
Thanks, Mamajane123

Re: Re: All PRI shows
You might be looking for the music that is played in between the pieces on NPR's All Things Considered. Those pieces were recorded for the show by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. These recordings are not available commercially.

However, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra has several recordings available under the direction of Wynton Marsalis.

Re: All PRI shows
Just a short comment on your "quiver full" story that aired this morning. Yes, children are gifts from God, and there are many of these gifts out there that are homeless and parentless. God loves us all, and he loves this home that he has given us in this earth and it's resources. They are finite, and we need to be good stuarts of these gifts also. If you want to fill your quiver with Gods children why don't you use some of the little arrows that are already here instead of using up what precious resources we have left by creating more? Aren't all Gods children worth this?

Re: All PRI shows
Today, March 26, you aired a very interesting program about how the FDIC takes over a failed bank. I had never heard how the nuts and bolts of receivership actually play out; your reporter did an excellent job presenting this information. I was also pleased to hear of the efficiency and sensitivity of the FDIC employees as they worked with the bank employees in what is certainly a very painful transition.

Re: All PRI shows
ENOUGH! Time to take away the TakeAway. What drivel and waste of air time. Today's show had listeners calling in to state what they were doing - driving, making coffee, fascinating. Please get rid of it. They have nothing to say.

Re: All PRI shows
Your segment on dogs brought back memories of our dog, Ranger, that may amuse you.

Ranger was a six-week old German Shepherd puppy when a friend gave him to us, but he was a member of the family until he died at 12 years of age.

Among the funny things he did was watch my son and I wash the sea-water off our diving gear on the driveway after we returned. One time, I mischievously put the buoyancy compensator around his neck and a pair of goggles and snorkel on his forehead, and took his picture. He sat patiently, but he had a real hang-dog expression on his face.

Another time, during the Jewish holiday of Passover when we open the front door to let the mythical prophet Elijah enter, in walks Ranger, who had been lying quietly at the front door. He had a very quizzical expression on his face, wondering why we were all sitting at the Seder table laughing at him.

There are many other funny stories about Ranger I could recount. Suffice to say that despite hip dysplasia he liked me to take him on a walk every evening after dinner, and he did so the night before he died.

Re: All PRI shows
Is there a possibility to bring in experts to discuss not just the legality of abortion but the morality of it. I think it is fair to discuss if abortion right or wrong? We have much knowledge, can we draw conclusion based on what we already know? If lynching colored people was legal would PRI be discussing "Lynching colored individuals is legal in the US, but it is not safe for the white man to do it himself, so let us find a safe way to do it."

That is how I feel about your "Abortion is legal.." show. It hurts my conscience and deeply offends me when such reasoning is used to play with life and inflict pain on the most vulnerable of all, the fetus in the mother's womb. She was supposed to protect the life in her, but in a moment of crisis she sacrifices a life on the altar of fortune.

I was listening to PRI while doing chores today April 24 right before 1 Pm in Los Angeles and heard an interesting show on private schools in poor countries. I failed to catch the name of the author and his book. Can I have that information.

The show you heard was PRI's "The World." You can find more information about that segment, including the author of "The Beautiful Tree," James Tooley, at http://www.theworld.org/node/25938

Who does the Pope thinks he's kidding? Peace? Read the bible.
"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26) "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34) "I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division." (Luke 12:49-51)

This American Life
This American Life has been my favorite radio program for many many years. I love Ira Glass. I think the Giant Pool of Money was a great achievement, at a time when we really needed it the most. I hope to be able to continue to enjoy the program, although I question that I'll be able to do that if Adam Davidson will be an on air contributor. I now regret tuning in to the Planet Money Podcast, which started from the success of "The Giant Pool of Money" episode on This American Life, because I've learned, from a podcast, that Mr. Davidson can not be respected or trusted to report news or information. I listened to his May 8th podcast on Planet Money, and it forever changed my opinion of him. It has also tainted my opinion of NPR for condoning his behavior.

The only value that the May 8th podcast of Planet Money, featuring Elizabeth Warren, has is to illuminate for the listeners the character and ethics of Mr. Davidson.

I can't trust him, because he distorted the truth in the past. He created a slanderous piece against Elizabeth Warren. He exhibited some characterological problems that I found troubling...whether it is his ego or gender bias or something worse at play I don't know. His complete lack of humility and contrition (in spite of the fact that the show generated around 1,000 postings on the NPR website) makes me believe that he would do it again if he was given the opportunity.

This American Life has done a great job in helping us to understand our current economic trials, but, unfortunately, I'll never be able to trust any broadcast in which Adam Davidson is a contributor. I hope that This American Life will minimize the contributions of Mr. Davidson in their broadcasts. I'd hate to walk away from This American Life too.

I look forward to This American Life each week, but I've been dreading the June 6th program. I'm not certain whether Mr. Davidson will be a part of it, but it will ruin the experience if he is. Also, I won't be able to trust any of the information provided in it, if he is a contributor, since I've heard him intentionally distort facts in the past.

Re: All PRI shows
There was a segment on PRI today, 6/8, that I found especially disturbing. Lisa Mullins introduced the segment as an illustration of President Obama's comment in his Cairo speech that "the situation of the Palestinian people is intolerable." The President was referring to the entire situation, including being forced to live in refugee camps in Arab countries that refuse to absorb them. The PRI segment trotted out a puff piece to illustrate "intolerable" about a Palestinian truck driver from Hebron whose daily milk run could take from one to three hours because of an Israeli checkpoint. On this particular day, in fact, he zipped right through. The reporter compared this to the thirty five minutes it took him to get from Jerusalem to Hebron. There was no effort by the reporter to show any balance, or to ask any hard questions. For instance, the reason why there is no checkpoint from Jerusalem to Hebron, while there is a checkpoint from Hebron to Jerusalem, is because Israelis don't bomb Palestinians, only Palestinians bomb Israelis. I have sat on a line at a checkpoint from Canada to the US that took several hours, and the Canadians are not violently hostile enemies. President Obama also said in his speech "Palestinians must abandon violence. Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and does not succeed... It is a sign neither of courage nor power to shoot rockets at sleeping children or blow up old women on a bus." If PRI were fair-minded journalists, you might ask the truck driver how he felt about the Palestinian choice of violence to pursue their political ends, and whether this self-defeating choice contributed to his wait at the checkpoint. That would be real journalism, instead of trotting out a Palestinian propaganda piece. Ultimately, this segment did not illustrate anything "intolerable" about the Palestinian situation. Intolerable is Muslim mass rape of women in Darfur. Intolerable is Muslims blowing up Muslim worshippers at Mosques in Iraq and Pakistan. Intolerable is Palestinian violence against Israelis and other Palestinians. A truck driver taking an hour to get to Jerusalem is inconvenient.

Re: All PRI shows
You posed a question about the number of refugees in the world in a quiz and your answer highlighted 5 million Palestinians. For the sake of historical accuracy, please note that there were originally appox. 650,000 Palestinians "refugees." The 5 million now includes children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In all fairness, you should've also included the nearly ONE MILLION indigenous Jews ethnically cleansed from 9 Arab/Muslim countries and Iran. They and their offspring now number well over 6 million and are NEVER considered in these figures as refugees. Why is that? First, there is a bias by the 58 Muslim block members (plus their supporters) in the UN and the UN provides these figures. Second, the Jews from Arab lands had to resettle elsewhere (many in Israel), after losing all their property, bank assets, and 3,000 year-old history and community and now they are assimilated and have built new lives.

By the way, when do you stop calling Palestinian refugees, "refugees"? After 60 years? By this definition 1/2 of Israel would be considered refugees as the Jews expelled from Arab lands and their offspring make up this proportion of the the population. In the rest of the world, refugees are the first generation. Their offspring are not! Please note also that the Palestinians have received over $50 billions from the UN, the US, Europe and some Arab countries and yet they are still considered refugees?? By contrast, the Jewish refugees from Arab lands and Iran got nothing from the UN, not even a resolution condemning this crime against humanity.

There would not have been a refugee problem---Jewish or palestinian--had the Palestinians and Arab countries accepted the UN Partition Plan in 1947 of one Palestinian state alongside one Jewish state. Instead, the Palestinians and 5 Arab countries attacked the new Jewish state to "Throw the Jews into the sea". Even today the Palestinians teach their children to hate the jews and israelis instead of teaching them tolerance, understanding and respect for other religions.
Palestinians could have become a prosperous, independent, successful country with their own capital as Jerusalem if only they accepted the 1947 two state solution.

BBC News Hour
My sympathy to the family in TX who lost their son in our Iraq conflict, i believe. However, it was extremely divesive and unfair to talk about the uncaring East and West Coasts and pit them against the Midwest, which is bearing the majority of deaths from Iraq/Afghanistan. According to the Washington Post internet, when we passed 4000 deaths, CA 431, PA 184, NY 174, FLA 169, Ohio 168, TX 167. That number is over 5009 now. Yes, the many midwesterners from other states who have died for this cause may outnumber the coasts. We are all losing our young. Thank you President Obama for deciding to withdraw. This will not ever affect the loss the USA suffers with the death of these fine men and women.

Re: All PRI shows
just a "Here and Now"comment...the new title and "change over" was smooth and still enjoy program. Robin is a fine host. Did enjoy "Monica" today 6/7/09, mainly because she does not do the "journalists/reporter stutter". Just talks smoothly while still sounding sincerely interested in her topics. Thanks for listening and giving a good program to listen to!

RE BBC NewsHour, topic: fatal alcoholic beverages in Bangladesh/Pakistan:
Similar problem in United States in late 19th/early 20th century. Condition called 'jake leg'. Caused by dangerous non-comestible alcohol additives. Symptoms included temporary/permanent blindness, temporary/permanent paralysis, particularly of legs & sexual organs, & death -- sometimes immediate or as a result of repeated ingestion . Many blues songs refer to this.
