During WWII the United States issued a series of stamps in tribute to 13 countries overrun and occupied by the Axis powers. The World's Marco Werman has been wondering, what would that series of stamps look like if it were issued today?
What countries would you feature on a new version of the 1940s 'Overrun Countries' stamps?
The original 'Overrun Countries' series were all five cent denominations and featured the flags of the respective countries. What kind of design would you prefer? Do you think such a series of stamps is still appropriate?
You make a great point about flags - maybe there are other ways that people would like to be recognized/honored. I've never been a fan of flags anyhow.
palestine has been under occupation for more than 70 years!!yes..70 years..
it has been almost a centry and peace is not anywhere soon. palestinians are treated exactly the same way the native americans were treated 500 years ago. Both were kicked out of their homes. Both were looked at as terrorists or beasts. However, 500 years later, the world knows how much the native americans had suffered. I hope it will not take another 500 years to realized how much the palestinians are suffering!!
In the sense of having been recently conquered and occupied by a foreign army, these come to mind:
Afghanistan
Chechnya
Granada
Iraq
Kuwait
Malvinas Islands
Palestine
Panama
Tibet
Palestine, Kurdistan, Chechenya, Tibet, all the native nations of the Americas, Aboriginal Australia, etc. There are more meaningful things that the US could do than to make a stamp, but symbolically, those peoples would probably appreciate the recognition.
CYPRUS (Invated by Turkey since 1973 and forced the split of the island in half by the creation of the creation of the pseudo-republic of Northen Cyprus)
Tibet (no comment!!)
I would put the United States itself on the stamp, since our government has been overrun by a radical junta that seems hell bent on destroying our country from the inside out with its reckless policies both domestic and abroad.
