Web propaganda

Islamic extremists are using the Internet to spread their violent propaganda. Their Internet PR machines link to the Arab world with music, blogs, and videos.

Should violent Islamist websites be blocked by homeland security?

Would attempts to keep this kind of content off the Internet be useful? Or is this unacceptable censorship?

I don't think our government should be in the business of blocking access to any Web sites. Any type of acccess limitation can be used against us and damage the reputation of the United States abroad. Homeland Security should bring down these Web sites by working with high tech professionals around the world.

Were you aware of S. 1959: Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007

http://mrx...ention-act

They want to shut down web sites in the US that they think "might" cause terrorism.

The problem is they are not just targeting terrorists. They are targeting people like the 911 truthers.

You may think these people are nuts, but if they can silence these people, who else will they be able to silence? http://www...5NJoZRYOJk

Limiting speech is limiting speech. Unless someone is specifically telling people to commit a crime, or somehow directly endangering people (like yelling fire in a theater), freedom of speech will not be squelched.

No, don't let us join the totalitarian countries we criticize by joining them in censoroing the internet.
Besides, we need to know what they're saying and we need to develop an antidote as we did to combat Communism in Eastern Europe.

Absolutely not! I do not think there should be censorship of any kind whatsoever!

Re: Should violent Islamist websites be blocked by homeland security?
I believe there is some pretty bad stuff on the internet, but the Islamic extremist stuff is not high on my list. Probably the only thing I can think of seeing were some jihadist videos which depicted dead American soldiers, and other gruesome displays set to a arab music soundtrack.
It is more important to police the improper business activities which occur on the internet - busienss ripping off consumer. Also, the identity theft schemes must be curtailed. In particular the proliferation of solicitations from royal Nigerians wish to wish to park some cash in your bank account. There are the types of internet crimes I would like to see the government crack down on.

No. America should not be pretending its China. No website should be blocked unless its George's personal blog.

Re: Re: Should violent Islamist websites be blocked by homeland security?
My thoughts exactly. We are not China, and we can not condemn China if we do it ourselves. I would hope that we as a nation are intelligent enough to make INFORMED choices, and in order to get informed one would need access to all information, not just some that others have selected as appropriate.

Access to information allows one to evaluate it. For thinking people, such access is critical; for people who accept without thinking, access will make little difference. Diatribes and demagoguery can only be exposed if one can read them.

Re: Should violent Islamist websites be blocked by homeland security?
Crime is NOT to be encouraged through free speech but we should know. I think the world
should know who their enemy's are at all times and be well informed,
that Jihad is a very real threat to mankind. If this message can reach everyone
on the internet it would be a great start

Any individual or group who commit or promote criminal activity of any nature should be banned permanently from getting access to media regardless of their religion, as long as they are identified and with known criminal activity. If any of the above perpatrate a crime in the name of GOD or religion, people have the right to recognize them so they must be marked and avoided from any interaction or association.
