In May 2006 the U.S. Senate approved the construction of fencing along the southern border with Mexico. The move formed part of an immigration bill which is currently stalled in Congress. Here and there the construction of the fence runs into local resistance.
Do you approve of the plans for a 700-mile fence along the border with Mexico?
Yeah, that's what I thought but the person below says a "Jewish American woman from New York" did, which I think is little better. I've said a lot of crazy things in my time, the only reason the entire country doesn't have to suffer from my words is that no one (particularly a foreigner who no doubt had a simplistic and naive idea of what America is) ever put it on a statue. This open door policy is a nice fantasy, but it isn't true, not in a pure sense. Just because I hang the ugly picture that Aunt Mildred gave me for Christmas in my living room doesn't mean that I love it, it just means that I'm a nice guy who doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. After Mildred croaks I have nothing against throwing that picture in the trash, which I think we should do with the plaque that Liberty holds because that sort of sentiment is OVER and doesn't reflect the truth. Why do people want to come here, anyway? I think it's because they're too damn lazy to just copy our ways in their own home countries. If someone is truly my friend then they knock on my door before entering my home or wait for an invitation, but if they break in when I'm asleep or not looking then they are my ENEMY, plain and simple. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I'd be glad to xerox the Constitution and mail it to Mexico if they need a copy. As for this fence, it's just plain whacky. I understand why the Mexicans want to come here, but I understand a lot of things. And we DID kinda steal the place from the Indians, so we aren't clear of any wrongdoing here, but no one cries tears over the victims of the Aztecs and Mayans brutal human sacrifices and torturing so I feel no compulsion to cut their descendants any slack, even if they are just their theoretical descendants.
does it really matter??? we chose 2 post that statue only a few miles away!!! these are the words we chose to show the new-coming immigrants as they first came to america.
Sad, bet you believe we don't have the right to defend our nation either. Just like you have the right to put a fence around your yard, so to does the US have the right to put one at our borders. I agree our immigration process needs to be fixed, but that's a separate issue. Don't confuse the 2 please.
Forget a fence - put landmines in the desert that draw anyone up to no good to border check points. Unfortunately, the US doesn't have the stomach to do what is required to keep those who would break the law out.
That aint gonna stop nobody.. I dont know how the US cant see that my people need a better life.. they need to try livin in our shoes.. it aint a pretty life.. what would you do if u were starving, thirsty, and didnt have shit? you would want a better life. Thats what we do look for a better life..
You don't have shit because the Mexican governement (which is the real criminal in all this) is corrupt and inept. They, the high officials, believe that most Mexicans are Indian mixed and that they are the true Spaniards and should inherit the wealth. You think Americans are rascist? What a joke. If your leaders truly cared about the Mexican people then there would be free-enterprise and a strong law enforcement agency that would keep the drug cartels from wreaking havoc on the populace.
This problem will never be solved until Mexicans over throw their governemnt and replace it with a real democratic system.
Perhaps making a life for yourself there is a more honorable course of action than sneaking into someone else's back yard. You want my sympathy?, fine... You want my job?, no way.
To the question about the fence at the border. I agree that every country must protect it's own borders. Mexico does this with their neighbors to the south.
In regards to everything else on here. I'm a Mexican-American, born in this country. Both of my parents came here legally, through the right channels. We were blessed that my grandfather was also a Mexican-American who was able to bring his children legally to this country and as a result my father as well. I know what my life would have been like if I had been born and lived in Mexico. I'm not saying that it would not have been a good life but in comparison to what my life is now, it's a blessing.
I'm bothered and frankly angry, that my people are referred to as "the Mexican" or any other way that does not respect them as a people. I don't want my people to come here just to pick our food, clean our houses, work in the kitchens of almost every restaurant we eat in and cut our grass. I want my people to come to this country to better their lives through education and commerce.
Legal immigration is the way to go but I'm sure that most of you, on this post have never even given a thought on how corrupt and difficult that process is. How lawyers and immigrations officers extort thousands of dollars from people going through the process. How they fear immigration officers, who on a whim, have the power of "life or death" based on their moods that day. You don't know.
So...yes to the fence...we do need to protect our borders but from all sides. Let's not make it so obvious to the Mexican people on who you are really trying to keep out. Let's go beyond being tolerant of immigrants and learn to care for those who are less than us. Isn't it our responsibility? And...we need someone to take a long, hard look at our immigration system. From the workers to the process. It's ridiculous. There has to be a better way.
Fences, walls and analogous devices do not work. Au contraire, they do kill people, just ask anyone in Ireland, and you will hear many sad stories.
Walls, fences and the like failed miserably in Belfast, Berlin, currently in the Gaza and will defenitely fail in the US-Mx border. Instead we need co-operation and like the EU, launch a guest worker accord, and invest development funds in the depressed regions of America (the continent), much like EU development funds have worked wonderfully there.
Human solidarity must prevail and not emotional xenophobic non human exposes.
Thank you, merci, obrigado, gracias.
You're in denial. What's going on at our southern border is the main stream media's biggest secret. Killings, rapes drugs. Borders patrol agents being fired at, run over, killed. The main stream media will not report what's happening. If you think illegal immigratio is so good for this country than you need to look at the southwestern states and the impact it has had on them. California is going broke. Forty percent of the inmate population in California consits of illegal immigrants. Their social service agencies are going broke, hospitals are closing, over crowded schools.
you are wrong most of californias inmate population are african americans yet white people are scared to say anything about blacks because the are scared of lawsuits and being called racist. Most crimes in the US are commited by blacks, blacks take advantage of every government program healthcare, food, and disability even though they do not need them. But just because they are black nobody bothers to see if they really need them. They do not want to work and have kids that they do not support and we all have to pay for them. What would you say about that, maybe your problem is elsewere but you decide to take your anger out on hardworking people.
