Anti-China protests over the crackdown in Tibet have accompanied the Olympic torch relay in London, Paris, and San Francisco on its way to Beijing.
What do you think of the Olympic torch protests over Tibet?
Have you taken part in any anti-China protests? Do you think such protests will achieve little? Are they too violent? Should President Bush boycott the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing in August?
My heart is with the Tibetan people and I feel guilty for not going to San Francisco to participate in the protests against China, but will instead give the money I would have spent on gas to the International Campaign for Tibet. I pray this is the time in history that the world can pressure China into addressing the suppression that has taken place in Tibet for decades. I also plan on boycotting Chinese goods, as hard as that may be. My consumer habits will have to speak for me, since I can not reach the Chinese government directly. Tresa in Sacramento
HEY,i want to ask you how much do you know about China's Tibet issue. What evidence do you have to call it "suppression". It's rediculous to make such arbitrary judgement based on some partial and misleading information. i really feel sad to see those "civilized" people to act so irrisponsibly on this issue.
What is the correct information? Please give me just one paragraph of that kind of information. I don't think the mass media is not fair to this issue. However, I never heard any stout evident supporting "China's Tibet" even on internet.
Let me say part of your possible "misleading information." I assume you are one of common Chinese because I never saw a non-Chinese who thought China has good reason to occupy Tibet. Most Chinese just insist that Tibet has been part of China for a long time. How about Mongol, Korea, Vietnam? Are these countries part of China? If Tibetans think the Chinese government does not represent themselves, it is the most powerful evidence of oppression.
The second misleading information that you may stick around is the violence of Tibetan demonstration. Are you aware of that it is similar to Japanese logic criticizing Chinese independence movement when China was a Japanese colony? If you are a communist, you should not blame the revolution by force. They have the right to have power to govern themselves. Third, You may want to say that it is a domestic trouble between Tibetans and Chinese who have moved from China. So, do you want to say that it is a domestic issue that international society should not deal with? I know most Chinese also insist that Taiwan is a part of China. If my memory is correct, Taiwanese population is over twenty million. It is not a small number you can ignore even though it is less than 2% of Chinese population. You should remember that "one China" insults most Taiwanese as well as people of other countries.
Please let me know your "balanced" information and show your responsibility as a member of international citizen.
As a common Chinese, a traveller to some areas of Tibetan Amdo, a reader to some books published abroad, I agree with most of your opinion.
However, Tibet issue is a sophisticated topic.
a NGO called Ge sang Hua (in pinyin), organized by mostly han Chinese, are helping Tibetan kids for their study.
Obviously it's another conspiracy of US goverment to seperate China, or I should say another campaign to bring democracy and freedom to Tibetan people. Seems it's not that polite to dump these words in a US forum. SORRY! I just can't understand why so many Americans are extreme about the Tibet issue. Have you ever been in Tibet? How much do you know about it? You say if Tibetan people want independence, then China should give its freedom. So if your Hawaii people want freedom, will you let them go? Or the Scoland people, the North Ireland people? Please don't forget your westerner's past. Yes, mayba chinese goverment did violence to some insurgents. But the likely measure can be found in almost every county. Chinese goverment is just upholding its sovereign and peaceful life of most people of the country. Don't give one standard to others while another yourself! That's not fair!
The protests are justified. This is another case of Ethics and morality being sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. If the capitalist world is so buddybuddy with COMMUNIST China, why is the US so confrontational vis a vis Cuba?
Hypocrites....Why criticize the Chinese about crackdown on anything.?...Why the increase coverage by the western media....How many people got hurt on a crackdown by the Los Angeles police against protester? where is the coverage....How many people have been arrested protesting against the Iraq war?...or against the Bush administration ? WHERE IS THE COVERAGE....? The world is disapointed about THE BBC. Go back to the truth, stay transparent, do not let the status quo corrupt your ways or the BBC WILL LOST ITS CREDIBILITY FOREVER
"there have been some incidents of violence (in Tibet), nothing serioius, but disturbing" a quote from your yesterday's show. I'm totally disgusted. If burning down shops and buring Chinese alive are not serious, what is serious in Lisa's (the broadcaster) mind and conscience? Maybe killing and raping Iraqi civilians are nothing serious either. Shame on you! To be a fair media why don't you tell the other side of the story? Everyone has the right to protest and experss their points of views. But don't turn a blind eye to veiws different from yours, just like the Tibetans are definitely right in their anger for lack of freedome!
1. You don't know those ethnic Chinese died in the roit, why insult the death like their life and death don't even worth of mention. Why try to hurt those poor Tibetans by fuel the hatred between the Chinese and Tibetans with your biased report
2. Why do you say the anger of ordinary Chinese people is because of State media propaganda. For those of us live oversea, who have not seen the Chinese state media report, we are angry and offend too. Why don't you tell your auduience that western media uses picture from Burma as evidence of Chinese crack down of Tibetan. Shame on you
3. Tibet was part of China before Dalai's exile, Dalai holds high position and high honor within Chinese Communist government before his exile, if he didn't want independence, why is he on exile?
4. Dalai was both political and religious leader in Tibet, what did he do to improve the life and eqaulity of Tibetans when he was the most previledged and powerful?
5. If China is guilty for Darfur for her commercial ties, China is more guilty of Iraq war, becasue it's because China buying US treasury bonds that make the fund available for US Government to start Iraq war. Do you think this argument make sense?
1. Are you insisting that the ethnic Chinese who have injured, you also think that they are not Tibetans, is the enough reason for the suppression of Chinese government?
2. What is different between those "overseas Chinese who have not seen the Chinese state media report" and others? Why do you think that others are biased and overseas Chinese are balanced?
3. China was part of empire of Japan and empire of Mongol.
4. How did he lose his power? By the people of Tibet?
5. O.K. I got your point. You are saying that China has the full right to do so because the U.S. invaded Iraq?
If western media is not biased, why would all the reporters on CNN reported 50%-50% show up at yesterday's torch relay in San Francisco for pro- and anti-China forces. From the views that I saw on TV, I surely saw more Chinese flags. Some of the PBS reporters mush be there too. You should know the truth in your heart.
Of course, Chinese are on the defensive when biased and unfair attacks are towards them. I'm an Chinese American who left China in Feb, 1990 and witnessed the uprising in 1989 as a student. I read the western media reports and strongly felt the coverage on Tibet are mostly unfair and biased. The best job that I have to note is from Wall Street Journal. At least I see they are trying to present the real picture. (I guess you need a real picture for the businessmen to make important decisions.) I think a lot of western media reporters live off other people's miseries and fanning troubles for the world. Racial and religious differences of the Chinese make them the easy target for the western media reporters to gain their audiences and win them bigger paychecks in the west.
I wonder if anyone realized that authoritarian style is rooted in Chinese culture. If you look into Chinese families, you would find most parents if not all are authoritative type. They interferes with their kids' choice of career and spouse which is unacceptable in the west. Obeying parents used to be and still the virtue. They say that parents have more experience and know the best. The west brainwashes their kids with God's command. The Chinese fills the brain of their children with their virtues. If authoritarian communist government is what they chose, it's none of the west's business. It's Chinese's right to defend what they have and treasure, including Tibet and the Olympic torch.
On the human right issues in Tibet, please just go to Tibet and Palestine, you can tell me who is the luckier one. I bet attacking Israel's human rights record would cause reporters to lose their job.
I personally love America for its free speech. But words can be hurtful as knives. From the reaction of Chinese Americans in San Francisco, I know a lot of ethinic Chinese felt like me that Chinese people are being stabbed by the media. Even though I personally hard to imagine, a lot of my friends are moving back to China after seeing the "free west". For them, this is not a better country.
As a Bay Arean, I have mixed feelings. I really really hate the concept of Free Speech Zones, but I can see why they may sometimes be necessary.
I'm saddened that we couldn't put the protesters on one side and the counter-protesters on the other and run the torch down the center. Though I am less well disposed toward the entire torch ceremony as it was restarted by Adolf Hitler and is supposed to recognize the superiority of the Aryan race.
I think China's colonialism is coming home to roost with HK, Tibet, and Xinjiang all finally getting a chance to squirm out from under China's monolithic press thumb long enough to scream "China's version of this story is not the only one!" There are ethnic Chinese and Tibetans on both sides of this.
I think Mayor Newsom made a good decision, as it angered people on both sides. In government, that's as close to "good job" as one is often likely to get.
I think Bush will attend the opening games, since he needs a new iconic picture other than "Mission Accomplished" on which to retire his legacy (of shame). It's too bad the political statements of our nation are currently being perpetrated by someone who failed in his military service and would trample anything to get in front of a press camera.
I think it's hypocritical to protest China's policies while wearing Chinese-made clothing, Chinese-made shoes, and typing on a Chinese-made computer. Money speaks louder than words. Do something better with yours than supporting the Chinese government.
I am very angry about the PRI let Lisa conduct such very biased program. She stands by violent people and is misleading regular American like a shameless politician for special political interest. She (and other PRI staff) should study the Tibetan history before going public broadcast. Like a lot of other Americans including a female SF torch carrier, Lisa is so ignorant about the relationship and history of China and Tibetan. And she was not aware that today's Tibetan issue was a product of cold war and generated by CIA like Bin Liden. As the former ambassador to China, also a former CIA officer, James Lily stated in PRI, that DaLai Lama was fully supported by CIA from weapons to financial as early as 1956. He went to the border of Tibetan and Nepal to meet DaLai Lama's chief financial officer for the preparation of the insurgence against the Chinese government that led 1959's bloody confrontation with the Chinese army and lost of thousands lives on both sides. So, unlike decorated as a peaceful religious leader against violence like Gandhi of India, from the beginning of his leadership, the exiled Tibetan government never gave up the violence against the Chinese until 1974 when the Nixon administration officially terminated the public support of DaLai's movement including the shut down of military training camps in Colorado and Napel.
PRI, as a public funded media, should be independent and provide the public with unbiased information rather than mislead the public. Of course, Lisa, herself, can have her different view of Tibetan issue in her privet life but she can not use PRI as a stage to express her extreme political opinion. Elsewhere PRI will become the media like Chinese that full with propaganda.
Shame on you Lisa! I lost the confidence on PRI as my independent news resource!
HELLOOO!! where did u get these info from??? Communist govt.???? Long live PRI and democracy... by the way, China's media is run by the govt. Western media is free and independent. Japan, S.korea, India,Brazil, S.Africa, and many countries spoke against the crackdown in Tibet...
When We were called Sick man of Asia, We were called The Peril.
When We are billed to be the next Superpower, We are called The threat.
When We were closed our doors, You smuggled Drugs to Open Markets.

But He did bought a ticket for the Famine Relief Ball for us.)
So, We Tried Communism, You hated us for being Communists

to the Silent, Silent Chinese.
To the Silent, Silent Chinese(good poem by the way but you got issues for sure!!) and the rest of you "Not so Silent" Chinese who are supporting this torch relay:
I don't know why all of you view everything that is going on as an attack to your Chinese-Ness
Let's gets some facts straight here:
1) I lived under a dictatorship and know the history of China very well and this whole claim that China makes about Tibet being a part of it is very shady at best and at the end of the day not really true. China and Tibet were both conquered by both Mongolians and Manchu and Tibet gained its independence sooner than China did from the occupiers. I know all about Tibetans being slaves before and under Dalai Lama and all the rest of it...We can keep going with historical arguments for rest of our lives for ever but the bottom line is this "Tibet wants to be free from China" and if you people don't understand this then something real terrible has happened to you all over the years which is called "Brain Washing". People who want to be free should be able to be free, PERIOD. And that should be applied everywhere else in the world as well.
2) This is not about someone not liking (or hating) Chinese people. It has nothing to do with it. True, some Chinese got murdered in Tibet. We know that and it was very wrong but Tibetan have gotten hurt and killed as well over the years by the Chinese security. That is a fact. Some of the Chinese people have chosen to close their eyes and pretend that the Chinese government is not made of bunch of murdering thugs, remember Tiananmen Square? And that's just the tip of the iceberg right? You keep bringing up: how many people got hurt/arrested in the LA protests or other events here and there in the west and try to compare it with what's going on in china and Tibet. Those people in the west who get arrested get let go the same day or the next day most of the time. They don't get tortured and killed okay. I am one who has lived under a dictatorship and have been through a lot so don't even try these arguments, it does not fly. People in Tibet and China disappear and you never see them again... they get tortured and killed left and right and don't even try to tell me that's not true..I know a lot of stuff... did you forget?..Don’t fool yourselves.. for god's sake people in china are not even allowed to watch the western news and china still does not allow anyone(including)UN to go to Tibet to see what's going on...yes you say it's because they don't want bad publicity because of the biased western media (who Chinese people are not even allowed to watch over there(!))...who are you kidding?...if they don't have anything to hide why are they hiding everything and even block the internet in china?
3) I understand you are sick of prejudices that the white man and others have shown toward the Chinese people over the years but this is not about that. Get over yourselves and get back in the side of the GOOD. If not, you are either agents of the Chinese government or just gone. The Chinese government is a dictatorship, Tibet should not be part of China if Tibetan don't want to be part of China and maybe someday Chinese people will be free too... The Good will win at the end. Cheers R2
I am pleased to here a voice for Southern Succession, Native American Succession, The freeing of Hawaii (Colonially captured and forced membership unquestionably brutal) these righst are so seldom voiced in todays politics. Returning Alaska to the Native Alaskans makes sence now that most of their oil has been sold.

I hated Chinese communist regime as my family members killed, jailed like other many Chinese suppressed by the communist. But I can not agree with you that Tibet was an independent nation before 1949. You distorted the fact that Tibet was still part of China, then the Republic of China (now the Taiwan government) after the Qing Dynasty was turn over in 1911. Until 1948, Tibet sent their delegates to the National Assembly Congress representing the Tibetans as a member of China family. Look at the China map before 1945 published by USA and even Britain, Tibetan was a part of Southwest China. Even a lot of recorded WWII films also mentioned US troops joined then Chinese army defended Japanese invasion in SW China including Tibet.
I wonder why some ones suddenly try to change the history of Tibet. Because of PRC is a communist regime and with different ideology? Or maybbe someone just want China weak forever and can be bullied by western as those old colonists?
Cafferty, who appears daily on CNN's "The Situation Room," made the remarks April 9 as host Wolf Blitzer was comparing today's China to that of 20 or 30 years ago.
"I don't know if China is any different, but our relationship with China is certainly different," Cafferty said. "We're in hock to the Chinese up to our eyeballs because of the war in Iraq, for one thing. They're holding hundreds of billions of dollars worth of our paper. We are also running hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of trade deficits with them, as we continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we're buying from Wal-Mart.
"So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed," he said. "I think they're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years."
From CNN, the most famous cable news in the world... such a joke....
