I am amazed that this is even being considered. It's inconceivable that Arabs will accept Blair as anything but one of the causes of the problem as opposed to one of it's solution. This scenario presupposes that the Arabs are not intelligent enough to know who has furthered their cause or retarded it. Simply amazing. Public relations is not going to go very far in solving the problems in the middle east. For all his eloquence and glibness, Blair is without substance.
Is this a serious question? As stated on "The World," Tony Blair is the 3rd most hated man in the Arab world behind George Bush and Israel's leader, Olmert. Tony Blair is a vicious little man; beady eyed just like his buddy Bush, an imperialist warmonger. Why would the Arabs trust him after the illegal attack on Iraq??
Blair is a total disaster, as the previous posters most eloquently concur. Now - let's think of some one who would be good.. A serious contender.
Jimmy Carter is qualified. Unpopular with israel with his "apartaid" comment.
George Mitcehll - proven track record in N. Ireland.
Gerry Adams - proven track record in N. Ireland.
Jacques Chirac - who else is recently out of a job?
Gorbechov
Havel
Kofi Annan
maybe a Chinese leader?
Mit Romney - he saved the olympics
It was the British, angry at British Petroleum's being kicked out of Iran, who convinced Eisenhower to send the CIA in to take out the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh after he nationalized the oil fields.
We may forget or never learn this essential bit of history here in the United States -- but this 54-year-old act against Democracy and for Tyranny has never been forgotten by Iranians and many, many others in the region.
George Bush's rejection and replacement of the democratically elected Palestian leader, and the crushing withholding of owed funds, has only shown, once again, that same hypocrisy. To have a Brit again come over and tell Middle Easterners how they must do things is only further insult.
Incredibly absurd! If it wasn’t for Blair, and his egging on of our President Bush, Middle East would be so much more stable, with far fewer deaths of innocent civilians. Blair is antithetical to peace in the Middle East! Besides, United Kingdom’s dealings in this region are highly suspicious and self-righteous.
Mr. Blair should simply look forward to an uneventful retirement where he is not given charge or responsibility of anything.
It would be good for him.
It would be good for the world!
Tony Blair is a very talented politician, but, alas, his deep committment to our war in Iraq has left him behind the eight ball. He will have to work VERY VERY hard to recover any semblance of being 'an honest broker'.
