How much have immigrants changed my community? Depends on who you are calling immigrants. As there is only one Native American family in my community and they came recently, then immigrants, all of us, made our community. If you are asking about Chinese or Hispanic or African immigrants, they have added greatly to my community.
We have great businesses that they have started: not just the Thai and Japanese restaurants, the Central American cleaning services, and small businesses, but also larger ones like retail stores, web programming companies, etc.

Each of us has our own experience to mold our opinion on this issue;our own particular window affording us an, at times, unique view. However, my years in Miami, Florida showed me a rigid and frequently intolerant, immigrant enclave where the freedoms afforded by our Constitution seemed to stop at the County border. Things are improving in South Florida, with the passing of some of these intolerant souls and the assimilation of newer generations. However, this imported challenge to our democracies is a recurring phenomenon which we're seeing replayed in London, Madrid, Paris etc.

At some point, Western democracies must take the initiative to discourage ethnic enclaves by reaching out to immigrants and by actively opposing imported practices that are incompatible with our democratic principles (eg. gender discrimination, honor killings, dog fights etc.) If we fail to do so, fascist hordes will seize control, as in the novel "Up Dog Street" where one of the main characters explains: "The browning of America doesn't concern me, as long as it's not a reference to the color of their shirts."

I believe when you say "Latino", who you really mean are Mexican. Mexicans are in a unique position being adjacent to the US porous southern border. They can come and go virtually at will. As an illegal Mexican in the US, one is in the unique position of earning relatively high wages, and spending those wages in a low-cost country. It's this arbitrage that makes the system work. Other Latinos do no have this advantage because they all must traverse through Mexico who jealously guards her strategic position.
It kind of like living in Washington where there is no income tax, and working in Oregon where there is no sales tax.

My community used to be 95% white in the 1970's but it changed dramatically when jobs began to be sent outside the US. Slowly whites began to move out and Mexicans began to move in.

Today the community is considered 80% hispanic but don't let that word fool you. It's 80% Mexican.

Our schools are between 92-96% hispanic (Mexican) and many school building are less than 5 years old. We have the second largest hispanic (Mexican) community in the state. We also have the second largest impoverished community.

People declare themselves poor but they always seem to have the money to buy homes, cable TV, new clothes and of course, 1 or 2 brand new SUVs. Where do they get the money?

My neighborhood is filled with gangs. The little ones can't wait to get a tatoo and a gun, just like big brother. The parents could care less about where their children or whose property they damage.

For a neighborhood that has a population over 100,000 and most hispanic (Mexican) there are very few loyal Catholics. The Mexicans seem to use the Church only as a weapon of propaganda against the people of the US.

I thought I had seen it all when I saw a 75 year old woman fighting to get her purse from an illegal who had attacked her in front of her Church, on Sunday, in front of many people.

I am glad I saw this because it shows the true evil in these people. They want nothing but to destroy the United States of America and its culture. They contributed nothing in the 20th century. They are entitled to nothing in the 21st century. They should reap what they have sown

Re: How much have immigrants changed your community?

The subject of immigration, as much as I hate to say it, has nothing to do with the immigrants themselves, but with the way that this country opporates as a self supported entity. The fact that illegal immigrants do not pay taxes means that by dictionary definition, they're parasites. They do not pay taxes, yet they are provided protection by the law to live as an American. I'm sorry, but democracy cannot support those who do not participate or uphold it. The fact that illegal immigrants are tolerated in this country is an insult to my hard work, not too mention the unskilled competition they bring. I, as a person, have absolutely no prejudice feelings towards other ethnic groups, and if they would like to attain legal citizenship and work towards the American dream, more power to them. I am in full support of a diverse civilian population, but a diverse population that gives the government what it is due in exchange for the opportunity that would otherwise be denied them.

Re: How much have immigrants changed your community?

Too much! Our schools are overcrowded due to an uncontrolled increase of illegal immigrants in my community. So much so, that additional school spending is reported because they are having to hire Spanish-speaking teacher and staff. Our own kids' education is being watered down to accommodate all the illegals that come demanding they be given the same rights to an education even though they do not deserve it. In addition, tax payers in my community are being forced to dish out millions of dollars annually to pay for medical services and state hospital bills generated by the thousands of illegal immigrants without medical insurance.

Other ways in which you can see the impact of those immigrants, is in the labor force. One look at the classified ads for employment offered shows you an increaded percentage of employers demanding that job applicants speak Spanish. This is the U.S., for crying out loud!! I immigrated into this country 30 years ago and spoke almost no English and no one at the time gave me any consessions I did not deserve because I couldn't speak English. I learned English because that's the responsibility of ALL immigrants coming to our country.

Car insurance policies continue to increase because of the thousands of immigrants in my community who drive uninsured.

How could this country have allowed all these apalling abuses to happen?? I don't get it.

Re: How much have immigrants changed your community?

I clearly see why so many people have negative feelings, and experiences with illegal or "legal" immigrants. It is right this is not our country, and we ought to assimilate, this is not Mexico, or El Salvador or Guatemala, etc, etc. Part of the problem is that the demand for illegal immigration is greater than the a process needed to assimilate or educate. The truth is that is that tomorrow the US was to sell back Texas or declare California independent and be annexed to Mexico the poverty problem will continue to head up north ongoing. People will continue to cross into Oregon or Florida or other border states. Because is not about the land per say, but culture. the culture of poverty, corruption and neglect, the love and control of money of the few. We have now the richest men in the world a Mexican national Mr. Slim, Carlos Slim Helú's fortune is up almost $20 billion in a year according to Forbes magazine. There you have it, and for anyone who has visited Mexico as a tourist knows the inequality of the distribution of wealth in Mexico or other countries. Nevertheless I am not playing the game as the rich man owes every one else, or blaming the rich for the misfortunes of the masses.
I pray for wisdom for the leadership and the people of this great nation to deal with the current issues in a just and gracious way which will benefit many and every one.
God bless America the leadership of this country and it's god fearing people.

Mexican employees support the American manager in providing services to the public.

My grocery store offers this weeks sale items and other products posted in both English and Spanish.
Re: How much have immigrants changed your community?

I just got this in my email concerning schools, the National Anthem and immigrants.I work my ass off trying to make ends meet, living paycheck to pay check and support MY COUNTRY in every way paying TAXES and here is something MY TAX DOLLARS funds for immigrants, which by the way I never had a say in.Now just where do we draw the line? When the money runs out?Or when ENGLISH becomes a forgotten Language?????THIS IS MY COUNTRY AND YOU(FOREIGNERS)ARE TEMPORARY GUESTS!

Could this be true!!!

Do you know that we have adult students at the school where I teach who are not US citizens and who get the PELL grant, which is a federal grant (no pay back required) plus other federal grants to go to school? One student from the Dominican Republic told me that she didn't want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting PELL grant which paid for her total tuition and books, plus money left over.

She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD for gas to come to school, and into CARIBE which is a special program for immigrants and it pays for child care and all sorts! of nee ds while they go to school or training. The one student I just mentioned told me she was not going to be a US citizen because she plans to return to the Dominican Republic someday and that she "loves HER country." I asked her if she felt guilty taking what the U.S. Is giving her and then not even bothering to become a citizen. She told me that it doesn't bother her, because that is what the money is there for!

I asked the CARIBE administration about their program and if you ARE a U.S. Citizen, you don't qualify for their program. And all the while, I am working a full day, my son-in-law works more than 60 hours a week, and everyone in my family works and pays for our education.

Something is wrong here. Right? ;
I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close. Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along.

You're using a term that means nothing to me. An immigrant is a person that leagally seeks to come to this country and become a part of the success that this great nation has created. Those coming across our borders are not immigrants but illegal aliens that will never do anything but take from this country and never give back as so many other immigrants have done since this nation was formed. If this is allowed to continue, we will be nothing more than a second rate nation like the nation they left.

Are you talking about the clitorectomies that are performed by some of the people from the Middle East? Stoning rape victims to death, as they do in the Middle East? Arresting people that have dogs, as they do in Iran (a country in the Middle East)? Or are you talking about the "erotic dance" strip clubs in Mexico that feature girls as young as 8 dancing for the perverted patrons? Or are you talking about the culture in Central America of sexual relations with children that are way, way under the age of 18? Or, are you talking about the killing and hollowing out of infant corpses to smuggle cocaine (a native drug of South America) into the United States?
Yup, Family Values thru and thru. Perhaps you should do a little research and leave the Bubble that you live in before you post.

Re: How much have immigrants changed your community?

I have lived in my neighborhood for over 40 years and in only the past 10 years we have seen devastating changes.

LEGAL immigrants here in OC California have brought barking dogs, loud cars and rap music. They don't seem to understand that you have to cover your trash barrels during Santa Ana winds. Trash blows everywhere. Yes, there are cars everywhere. Construction projects abound - for years now, doubling the size of houses and turning a once quiet neighborhood into a constantly noisy one - power saws, jack hammers, bulldozers, etc.

The construction workers drive up early and work late. They are mostly illegals that come in unmarked trucks so this seems to be all part of the underground economy.

When their teenagers are outside late at night they don't seem to understand that you lower your voices, music and car noise after midnight. Some days it is round the clock noise.

When I have approached my new neighbors regarding some of these issues, I am met with hostility. Usually, they don't answer the door, though. Not very long ago we all visited our neighbors often and had a great, friendly time.

The houses here are expensive. These neighbors are all "businessmen." I have no idea what they do to get all of ther money. I could call the authorities on a number of issues, but I think that they would retaliate - possibly a vey dangerous move. I called the cops on a loud party and the kids, all Asians, who were soon leaving; swore at everyone's houses, threw trash and made threatening remarks.

I've never seen anything like it and I no longer feel safe in my own Country!

Immigrants are taking the jobs that Americans could be working, but seeings how immigrants don't pay taxes or housing and get free insurance they can work for pennies. Job companies see this opportunity and hire these illegals at fraction of the cost and fire there regular workers. before you know it, the job market is narrowed and millions of hard working Americans are out of work, and for those who are still working are forced to pay high and still rising insurance prices because the illegals are getting it for free, and for the retiring people, the US Government is giving our hard earned retirement to the illegals, not including what the government takes. Plus they bring illegal drugs and weapons with them and sell them to our young children and older ones also. So yes. this illegal immigrant thing is a big mess.

Most of the people who picked the crops, besides the locals ,were families from places like Arkansas, Oklahoma,Tennesee, etc. Now not only are all the jobs in the orchards done by hispanics, but several of the jobs in any and all other industries are now being done by hispanics.
Open your eyes, and perhaps you will put your heart in the right place. Your heart needs to be with the saving of America first!

This country is flopping around like a dying fish. Mexico would not allow US citizens to go storming across the border. They don't allow Guatemalans to storm their borders. The Police rough up illegals.
America first. The lifeboat is full. Sometimes I wonder what country I am living in anymore. People talk about Bilingual signage, In certain areas of my town there are commercial streets that don't have any signs in English. Billboards that are paid for by the Police Dept are in Spanish only.
If you think that I live in a Border-town, you are dead wrong. I don't even live in a border state. Nashville, Tennessee is almost 2000 miles from the border. We have been invaded. These forclosures that you hear all over the news==they are mostly in the area of town that has all the Spanish only signs. Why pay your mortgage right? Hey, you didn't come to the US legally, so why pay that silly mortgage payment thing. You can purchase the house, and live in it for a year "rent-free" before they foreclose on you. What a deal!

Wake up people, the reason that the housing market is so messed up is that hundreds of thousands of houses were sold to illegal immigrants. They are not paying the bills.

While illegal immigration is not all of the "woes" of America, it is adding weight to a sinking ship. How much longer can we handle this insane infux?

Go look up the "La Raza" website and check out their ideas for "Republica del Norte". In their own words, this is an invasion. If this is just people looking for work, why are they waving Mexican flags?

Wake up people, while you still have a United States of America!
