VPR Green Membership Drive

Every membership drive is an opportunity for the VPR community to come together for a common goal: paying for the programming that benefits you and the region. This Green Membership Drive, we're expanding the discussion...

What are you doing to live a greener lifestyle?

Buying local or growing your own food? Commuting by bike? Insulating your home? Just like a membership drive, all those seemingly small actions really add up when we all do our part. We want to hear from you!

Tell us what youre doing to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Share your tips, ideas, localvore recipes, resources, thoughts, and anything else about greener living here. You can also browse suggestions from fellow listeners and VPR staff.

How can you add your own ideas and tips? There are 2 ways:

1. Click the "Post Your Reply" below and submit your own.

2. When you pledge online or over the phone, you can tell us your comments and we will post them for you!

Re: What are you doing to live a greener lifestyle?
I collect tips and ideas to pollute less and use less energy and resources (in currently 18 categories) and post them on my website http://www.polluteless.com

In addition to that I try to live by what I suggest as being less damaging: We eat no meat to save energy, we hang-dry my clothes, I take 5 gallon showers, we keep the house pretty cold and instead dress warmly in the winter, and we use warm water bottles to heat the beds rather than heat the whole house.

Reduce the paper mail
Recycle everything! Contact businesses that send lots of paper and ask them not to.

The little things add up
Do all the little things - change household products (to be greener), compost, use reusable bags, etc.

Green Building
Here are a couple of "Green" buildings worth checking out, 1 local and 1 in the public radio family.

UVM's Davis Center: Click here to learn more about how the Davis Center was built to be more efficient and environmentally friendly. There's also an audio tour of the Davis Center put together by Professor Logan Brown's ENVS 195 class; you can listen or download the tour here.

WGBH's new Studio in Boston: 'GBH's news studio is LEED-certified by the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. Among the efforts that earned that distinction: reclaiming a "brownfield," environmental construction practices, and a solar farm and "green" roof. Click here for more.

Re: What are you doing to live a greener lifestyle?
We at Brighter Planet (a Middlebury, VT startup) are thrilled to be donating $15 dollars for every VPR pledge that comes in today via credit card to encourage a reduction of paper waste.

In terms of conservation efforts, we have compiled a list of over over 75 conservation tips and we do our best to practice what we preach. The average carbon footprint of Brighter Planet employees is 17.3 tons, compared to the national average of 23 tons.

Finally, we're all using the Brighter Planet Visa, which helps offset what can't be conserved through everyday purchases. Last week our cardholders reached 10,000 tons of CO2 offset!

Yes, I suppose that was a shameless plug, but we're really proud of what we're doing ;)

"Green Noise" in the NYT
The New York Times had an article yesterday about Green Noise about how we're all overloaded with so many Green messages it's hard to figure out how to make sense of it all.

Volunteer carpooling
Let VPR volunteers know if there's a possibility for carpooling - I arrived to volunteer and found 3 other people from my area who all drove separately!

Greener schools
Lobby your child's public school to start buying local products and to start a compost program. The Intervale is a good resource for this.
