Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
The surest sign that spring is near - the roads begin to heave and buckle in unusual ways. My cousin, a life-long Vermont farmer, taught me to look for the sugar snow, big white, fluffy flakes that float down gently. His dad, also a lifelong VT farmer called it "Poor Farmers' Fertilizer." He also taught me to look for the snow pulling away from the base of the trees. This is the surest sign of all. The sap is starting to flow and it's time to put out the buckets for sugaring.

Last Thursday (3/13) morning we had a "herd" of 50+ turkeys in the woods behind our house in Montpelier! There was one bearded Tom puffed up in all his glory and gobbling away to his harem!

Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
Saturday, six weeks after Groundhog Day, I spotted groundhog nosing around on the hill next to the Circ in the town of Essex. He didn't seem to mind the fresh snow on the ground.

I found a soggy worm on the driveway this morning, March 20, but could not find it later in the day due to the snow on this first day of spring.

From Newbury, Vt. This morning I again saw a woodchuck come out from under my porch; I had seen it about 10 days ago as well. I also saw two Canadian Geese fly over the house two days ago. Peter

Peregrine Falcons in Richmond
I saw a pair of peregrine falcons flying over Snipe Ireland Brook in Richmond on Monday morning (3/17/08). We hope they're nesting in the cliffs West of the road.

The maple trees are dripping sap on the pavement; there is a dead skunk in the middle of the road; and a wake of vultures are hovering over head.
