Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
Well, we've had the woodcocks doing their flights for about ten days (three this year); phoebes started calling on Sunday and last night the first spring peepers!

Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
Whoops, I forgot to add, we finished sugaring on Sunday. About eight gallons from 12 trees, not too shabby! And we'll let the wood furnace go cold today. The garlic is up, and we'll take off the winter mulch tomorrow. If I'm feeling really brave, the snow tires will come off this week.

The laying hens are all producing an egg a day again, too. I'm going to have to take them out of the garden soon so we can plant.

the Stick Game
Today I played The Stick Game (throwing the stick) with my neighbor's yellow Lab. This is a sure sign of the demise of winter. Although there's still at least 3 feet of snow on my irises, the daffodils are up and growing like weeds.

Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
On Saturday our ranch home became waterfront when the White River connected. The cornfield is flooded. the swing gives you the false sense of waterfront. Woodfrogs came alive. Merganzers landed, and Canada Geese are back. Wooly Bear caterpillar, and a spotted salamander peeked out from some leaves.

My sweet dog is allergic to grass. I know it's spring (and the grass is sprouting) -- he spends lots of time carefully licking his feet after playtime in the yard. SLURP!

Here in Montpelier, I know it's spring when there are kids are playing Ultimate Frisbee, barefoot, on the Statehouse lawn.

Very Early Spring in Vermont

Today was a warmish sunny day. The ground looks like it is loosening her white chastity belt and showing her unshaven legs-the hairs are matted and colorless.
When I opened my window this morning the smell of warm dirt came through on the edge of a breeze still crisp with snow.
We go out to check on the geese and to surveille our vast acre. Distinctive scents of ice cold water, decaying dog poop and rotting leaves make my nose smile.
