Blackbird singing in Brattleboro
Male Red-winged Blackbird, calling/singing mightily from the top of a white pine at Morningside Commons in Brattleboro on 3/11 eve. Guess it worked; before long a smallish flock of dark birds were about to fly by, he called, and as a unit they swerved & landed in the top of the adjacent pine. at the same
time, lower down in the stand of pines, a male cardinal was calling.

Return of the Blue Heron
One morning last week, I heard two birds fighting over the woodpecker hole in the corner of our house. It's definitely a sign of spring when I regain the sense of duty to fill in any new woodpecker holes! Also, a few days ago our resident blue heron made a majestic, lofty return over our field and settled somewhere in the beaver pond. We're in Putney.

Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
Most people think of the first signs of Spring as Robins and flowers. As I have gotten older I always think that Spring is on its way when I begin to smell skunks.

On Boardman Hill in West Rutland, a huge flock of red winged blackbirds have invaded us! And, this afternoon, some robins appeared! Perhaps there really is hope for spring!

Next to Button Bay State Park (Ferrisburgh) - the robins have been back since 2/18! And we saw the first red winged blackbird at our feeder during the ice last Sunday. Love the loud chirping that's back in the air!

Re: Tell us your Signs of Spring!
Yesterday (March 15), a boy about eight years old, wearing sneakers and a windbreaker, rode his bicycle by my house, through the melting slush. Later, a man walked down the street, hatless and wearing a short-sleeve shirt. Absolutely guaranteed sign of spring!
