Hi, I\'m Eileen Buckley and I\'m leading the WBFO Travel Club to The French Riviera in September.
Have you ever been there? I\'m anxious to learn about the secrets of perfume making! What do you know about Monaco?

Hello Eileen:

It\'s been several years since I was there, but the French Riviera is an astonishingly beautiful place. Wish we could go with you. As you probably know, the perfume capital of France is Grasse, about 20 minutes north of Cannes. Several "parfumeries" offer public tours of their facilities; the most well-known is Fragonard. There is also a perfume museum in the town. Fragonard also has their own museum. I have not been to Monaco, so can\'t offer any advice on that. Cannes is wonderful, especially along "La Croisette" along the beach. The Carlton Hotel is well worth seeing, even if you\'re not staying there. There is also a casino. Most of the European summer tourists should be gone by September, so the beaches should be less crowded and the roads less traveled, but the Mediterranean should still be warm enough for a swim. We stayed in Nice, a fairly large city, but with a lot to do and see as well. Be sure to visit Antibes, a few miles to the west.

Hi Eileen! You award-winning newsperson you! I flew into Paris a few years ago, and immediately took the train down to St. Tropez. I spent two days there and then back up to Paris for two days. I had no plans or hotel reservations of any kind. I took it as it came. I had a wonderful time... life-changing! The reason I\'m writing is to tell you that the people in France are incredible! I\'d heard such ridiculous stories. But from the moment I got there until the moment I left, I was mesmerized. The country is beautiful, and the people went out of their way to help me, and get me whatever I needed. They are incredibly well educated, and you will likely never come upon that level of civility anywhere else, as far as I can guess. The only French I learned, or needed while in country, was.. "Excuse me, Pardon me, Good morning, Good evening, please and thank you"! With only those phrases under my belt, I was able to travel successfully, stay safe, and thoroughly enjoy the company of the French people. I\'ll just give you a short example. My very first and earliest encounter was on the trains in Paris, on my way to the train to St. Tropez. The station stops were all in French! (duh!) A man who basically spoke no English, sat down and wrote out all of the names of the train stations for me, going so far as to list the stations past my stop, so that I\'d know if I\'d gone too far! He then in his best English explained to me that he\'d once taken a boys\' choir to St. John the Devine, a beautiful church close to Harlem in NYC. I\'m from NYC and had been to that church two or three times. His story was so moving! It escapes me what else he told me about the trip, except perhaps to say that the church was magnificent, but I was so taken by how diligent he was to ensure my success on the trains. My entire trip was chocked full of stories like that. You have to believe me when I tell you, I only live to get back to Paris. I get teary just thinking about it! I hope you have the best possible time, and now I will have to get in touch with Collette, and see what they can arrange for me.

Via con Dios my friend!
Love,
Cindy Chan
