Tolls on I-80

Coming up Thursday, January 10, WVIA's own State of PA will discuss the issue of toll booths on Interstate 80. This issue is so important, we thought it would be good to open the discussion before the show (and we'll keep it going here afterward as well).

Please remember this is a family discussion board - let's keep the rough language and personal attacks to a minimum, and discuss the issues in a respectful manner. Thanks

We don't feel that adding toll booths to I-80 will improve any situation. Consider that toll booths on the Pennsylvania Turnpike haven't ensured that road is better than other interstate highways. Obviously, new jobs will be created, but the construction and maintenance of the toll booths and salaries of those people employed in the "toll booth" projects will likely offset revenue unless the tolls are set high; but tolls, especially high ones, will deter motorists from using that highway with regularity if they can find less expensive alternate routes to their destinations.

New Tolls Are New Taxes
- - - New tolls are new taxes - - -

Instead of new tolls, I suggest reducing corruption in the management and unions responsible for the maintenance of our highways, freeing up money so it will be available to the state so it can provide public highway services the way it's supposed to.

Honest management starts at the top, which includes rewarding those people that are trying to do honest work, and kicking out people (especially expensive people) who got their jobs through nepotism or the buddy-buddy system.

New tolls / taxes will only tend to encourage additional corruption and a ripping off of the public.
